The Kona Bicycle Company, named after the town Kailua-Kona in Hawaii, was founded in 1988 by Dan Gerhard and Jacob Heilbron, along with former MTB champion Joe Murray as designer. With their early mountain bike models also getting their names from Hawaiian volcanoes or words, Kona was the first brand to produce a complete range of sloping top tube design mountain bike frames. Over the years Kona have also developed and refined a unique collection of rider oriented components, like the Project two fork, Velocity stem, Impact headset, O-Beam seatpost, Dewey Too bar ends, Joe's Clips toe clip system and Horseshoe brake booster, all field-tested in house by the team.

Self Energizing (SE)
Pedersen designed system, with an internal mechanism that amplifies braking power. As the pads contact the rim, they 'energise' the canti arms, dragging them slightly forwards and further inwards, thus creating extra braking power. (video)
