90s Specialized MTBs - Steel frames, rigid forks, 26" wheels

List of steel, rigid fork mountain bikes Specialized produced between 1990 and 1999, grouped by year, with information on frames and main components for easy reference.

Specialized had 3 models in its MTB line-up through the 90s (apart from the S-Works range). The top of the line StumpJumpers, designed for professional off-road riding, featured lightweight frames and high-end components. Introduced in 1981 the Stumpjumper was the world's first mass-produced mountain bike. RockHoppers were the mid-level, trail-oriented models with medium grade tubing and mid-range build kit. HardRocks were at the bottom of the line-up, geared towards recreational use. With an upright and relaxed geometry, they were usually equipped with low-end components.

Glossary

Butted

A tube having different wall thicknesses along its length, while its diameter remains constant.

Cro-moly (CrMo)

Low alloy steel with a medium carbon content, that gets its name from the primary alloying elements, chromium and molybendium. It has an excellent strength to weight ratio and is considerably stronger, harder more durable than mild carbon steel.

Direct Drive (DD)

Specialized's marketing name for their tubing. It was seamless, drawn (large diameter tube shrinked into a smaller one), and butted 4130 CrMo.

Double-butted

The thickness of the tube at both ends is thicker than in the centre.

Grip Shift

Shifting system, where part of the handlebar grip rotates back and forth, clicking into each gear.

High tensile

Low alloy steel that can withstand significant stress before breaking or becoming deformed. The term 'tensile' refers to the amount of stress a material can endure before failing.

Nitanium

Rithcey's Chromoly steel tubing that contains trace elements of Titanium and Niobium.

Rapidfire

Shimano's under handlebar, two-finger shift system, giving riders the ability to downshift more than one gears in one stroke.

SFS

Specialized Frame System; Specialized's proprietary angles, shape, diamater and wall thickness for tubing.

SIS

Shimano Integrated Shifting. Shift mechanism indents control cable advance for quick, precise gear changes without over-shifting.

STI

Shimano Total Integration / It combines the braking and gear shifting controls into the same component.

Tange

Japanese steel tubing manufacturer for bicycle frames.

Tange's top of the line, high-performance chrome-moly tubes.
